Hypothetical Question

Name: Anonymous 2010-04-26 4:08

You wake to find yourself in a plain room with two doors opposite each other and a note on the table. Reading the note, you find that you have been selected for a scientific study into human psychology.

The note tells you that the experiment takes place over the next 20 years, and you may not leave until that time is up. After 20 years you will be able to return to your life as normal. It tells you to press button A to open room A or B to open room B. By opening one door, you permanently lock the other door. By pressing both buttons simultaneously, you permanently lock both.

Behind door A is a hemispherical room with radius twice your height, in which you would be constantly observed. If you enter that room, you may request, by speaking into the microphone in that room, as many inanimate, NON-ELECTRONIC objects to be brought to you as you want, as long as there is judged to be no way that you could use the item to kill yourself or escape. If you do attempt to kill yourself, you will be sedated and returned to your room, with the items you used permanently removed. (Remember that you can ask to have all the essentials brought to you whenever you want; a bed, meals, drink etc). You will be force-fed if you choose to starve yourself.

Behind door B is a gun and a bullet.

Which door do you open?

Okay. What about a hand wind up gramophone record player to play some tunes? They don't require electricity.

I think the 20 year thing is the bad part, not the electronic restriction

How do you define "electronic"? As something that uses electricity only as a power source (e.g. lightbulb, something I'd rather describe as "electric") or something that manipulates the current as its basic mode of operation (e.g. just anything with transistors)?

Yeah, but it would be quite difficult for me to get by without some tunes. I figured the wind up record player would bypass the no electric object restriction. Though, it will probably have to be custom made. When those types of players were around, it was common to see top hats and three piece suits, lol (circa 1900 or so). Plus it would have to be fabricated to work with the more modern size of 33.

A without a doubt, I would request books and pen and paper, possibly a typewriter if that is allowed.  The most difficult thing to overcome is the solitude, but if you have overcome then the time is of great value. I actually would welcome a life away from people, i go for days on end without speaking to anyone and prefer my own company.

I do that too, but I'm on the internet a lot when I do.
You don't know what it's like to do that without the internet. It's not good.
I have done it in the past, once for six weeks with no internet, (at the start of I read "Unix for Dummies", yeah laugh it up) and sat fucking about with linux. The second time I did it without going out at all I just IRCed all the time. Now I never go more than about four days max at a time, and you can still keep in a little contact with the world.
You don't know what it's like without the internet. The OP was (maybe) trying to make that point with the exclusion of electronics from what you could have access to.

Can you ask for newspapers? That way I could at least know what's happening in the world. Can you send/receive letters, too?

You can always play your own music. What about waste disposal, though? Does the room have plumbing? Air ventilation? You need to take all of this into consideration before you kidnap people and force them to make this decision.

are you allowed drugs? I'd like some LSD in room A please
