Why do freezers always smell so bad?

Is it some kind of instinct? Does it ward off predators, cryovores and jerkfaces who leave the door open?
I'm sure you'll be glad to hear that my cherry yoghurt and caramel ice cream mix did not suffer because of the freezer's smell.
