Ridiculous, humans aren't the only things to kill themselves and it certainly isn't against basic instincts, in fact it
is a basic instinct.
It's in there because if you see a bunch of superior animals around you, then your brain tells you that you aren't really important, this will usually lead to you dying simply because of lack of will to live, but if there's no danger(like nowadays for humans);
then it might get to such a point that the creature doesn't just put it's life in jeopardy trying to prove to itself that it deserves life, it's actively trying to die.
Comparing yourself to others of your species is a failsafe of evolution that allows the inferior to prune themselves, passively, or in extreme cases, actively.
What's interesting is that some humans don't
have this failsafe, they can actually lie to themselves and believe it, whether or not this would help them survive in the real world is unknown, but it makes them better at working in teams and at sports, this is because they are mildly delusional though, and that should not be forgotten.
