The four pillars of reformation are judgement, admonishment, rebuke, and retribution. Judgement provides the transgressor with the knowledge that a transgression has been perpetrated. Admonishment provides a priming of the sense of shame that should accompany transgression. Rebuke provides a strong impression that others disapprove. And retribution provides a corrective measure that helps to ameliorate the disordered condition that the transgressor is responsible for.
Not all four pillars might be required for a transgression. The mildest transgressions may only require judgement to effect the desired modification of the transgressor's behaviour. The willingness of the transgressor to improve is also a factor in reformation. Some transgressors require the application of more pillars than others for the same transgression.
