I'm currently creating a swf calendar/clock intended for use with Windows' active desktop feature so that you can check the date and time in style!
The prototype:

The data is updated in real-time.
Now obviously it takes more time and effort to minimize all your windows to look at the desktop just to check the time and date when you can simply see it on your task bar (and hovering over the default clock). That's why I intend to change the picture's theme depending on the season and whether or not it's a holiday - think snowflakes, rain, maybe some flowers for the sunnier seasons.
The beauty of it is that anyone with a recent internet explorer version installed can use it (it has to be IE because that's what the Active Desktop feature uses and it can't be changed apparently). You can use whatever browser for your other needs, though. This is just for the desktop toy.
I myself am using Windows XP, though apparently Active Desktop was replaced by something else in Vista and 7 and I'm not sure how this would be integrated in those.
