Do westerns take shoes off?

I was kind of surprised as I visit a local austrailan's house and saw them still wearing their shoes on inside house. Is US and many other countries are like them?

Carpet is for fags. Even if you take your shoes off and all that it still gets dirty and becomes a haven for germs and other filth.
