Why do people clap at the end of movies?

Ok, I get clapping at a broadway show, or a play, since, you know, those people actually hear your applause. But it isn't like Jim Cameron is going to hear your clapping all the way up in his ritzy New York apartment. I don't get it, what is the point of clapping and cheering at a damn movie theater?
