Reality is brutal

for science and engineering majors.

Throughout their childhood and teen years they are tormented by their social superiors, to the point that they develop deep insecurities. Then their teachers and parents see their misery, and tell them not to worry. If you work hard in school, one day you'll grow up to be rich and important. Then you can look back and laugh at all those people tormenting you. Being naive young boys (or perhaps just willing to delude themselves), these kids actually believe what they're being told. So they dedicate themselves to their schoolwork, and eventually major in something excruciatingly boring, all on the promise that one day it will render them successful in life.

University comes, and they find no one gives a shit about them. They can't get laid, they don't get invited to the cool parties, they don't even know about the cool bars. They hang out alone, or with their equally dejected friends. But that's okay, one day they will graduate and get jobs, THEN they will be cool, cause why would mom and teach lie to them, right?

Alas, that was not right. They graduate, get jobs, and find themselves back in their hole. All of their colleagues are equally dorky and boring. No women are interested in their uninteresting field. Even the gold diggers laugh them off, in favour of greener (forgive the pun) pastures.

If they're lucky they find themselves a homely, boring woman that will tolerate them, get themselves a respectable house in a middle class neighbourhood, and have the required 2.1 children. Unfortunately little Timmy doesn't respect his meek, nerdy dad, and little Kate is growing into exactly the kind of slut that made pop miserable all those years ago.

I would like to say that our old boy has the courage to an hero, but more likely he'll just sigh, pour himself another whiskey neat, and continue living his regrettable life.
