Tip for anyone thinking of getting hamsters - Syrians (golden and other colour variations) are solitary and are better kept singly, while the dwarfs (Chinese and Russian) are social and benefit from company.

Is that why the dwarf hamster I had would always bite me no matter how much I held it? It was the only one I had

No idea. I had gerbils, which are social, but they were fearful and didn't volunteer to be held. I guess you have to raise them from very young with human hands.

No thanks. Also, why on Earth would there be a market for toy hamsters? Have people really become this shallow? My goodness.

Hamsters and Gerbils and Guinea Pigs are dumb.
They're just timid balls of fur that sleep eat and piss.
You should get a rat. They are actually fun to play with. Mice are okay too.

I had both rats and hamsters. The only thing I liked better about pet rats was their ability to do some jumping tricks, like jumping from the sofa to my shoulder. I assume that hamsters cannot do this as I have yet to own one which does. Rats also can balance on very narrow passages because of their long tail.
Hamsters for me have always been fun pets, despite their lack of abilities compared with rats.
