There was an X-files episode about this. Weiners were disappearing and then they found some floating in space and it turned out that this one nebula was actually a giant glob of space mustard.

From that definition, the moon isn't in space, and also anything in orbit around anything. Even galaxies are influenced by the gravity of other galaxies.
