"Ah, this is, uh, Cactus 1549," Sullenberger informed the tower after takeoff. "Hit birds. We lost thrust in both engines. We're turning back towards LaGuardia."
Within 30 seconds, the LaGuardia tower replied: "Cactus 1549, turn right ... you can land Runway 1 at Teterboro."
"We can't do it," Sullenberger replied, betraying no hint of the crisis. When the captain announced they were going into the river, the tower replied, "I'm sorry. Say again, Cactus."
"Cactus, ah, Cactus 1549, radar contact is lost," the tower said.
But with the power of Cactus, all passengers and crew were saved.
