that the halo effect is only relevant to people who are of immediate use, like doctors and teachers, and that uebermenschen, as he would probably put it, academics and the like, are deemed to be out of touch with society and eccentric, playing no necessary role in the world.

It sounds like old nietzsche was just defensive about being an ugly, inadequate nerd who couldn't get laid, or even write anything readable that wasn't a trite bumper sticker slogan. Real academics and philosophers,
(not bitter, shallow nerds), are considered gods among men by most of society; too important to do the donkey work of teachers and doctors.
