I think the common feeling is that academics and the like are above society and playing a necessary role in the world.
It sounds like old nietzsche was just defensive about being an ugly, inadequate nerd who couldn't get laid, or even write anything readable that wasn't a trite bumper sticker slogan. Real academics and philosophers,
(not bitter, shallow nerds), are considered gods among men by most of society; too important to do the donkey work of teachers and doctors.
