WASHINGTON - A researcher at the University of Washington may hold the key to a long held suspicion in American culture. Professor Stephen Buck may have unlocked the reason why African American people tend to walk out into the middle of traffic with no regard for incoming cars.
Dr. Stephen Buck the chair professor of the Cognition and Perception Faculty at Washington State University has published a controversial essay on a subject that some are calling racist but many in the science community are forced to agree with his findings. The essay titled “The spacial comprehension of motor vehicles in relation to African Americans” asserts that people of African American decent are less likely to notice the hazard that motor vehicles pose to pedestrians on a genetic level.
The essay asserts that African Americans inherently have a lower gradient of “Cones” in their retina and as a result have a deficient aptitude for high special activity. A low concentration of Cones in the forvea, as found in most African Americans, could explain why, as many American motorists have observed, people of African American decent tend to walk into traffic without apparent regard to the danger that motor vehicles impose. In his essay Buck says “We’ve all seen a group of black guys walk out into the middle of the street only to have courteous white motorists have to slow down for them as they slowly pass hiking their overly baggy trousers about their waists. For decades we in the scientific community thought that this was a social symptom but we are now armed with the knowledge that people of this particular genetic makeup simply are not equipped with an M-cone count sufficient to observe an object of the six to eight square meter range moving at sufficient speed effectively.” Dr. Buck’s findings have met with as much praise as they have controversy.
Charles H. Bailey OD, of the University of California at Berkley gave his thoughts on the essay. “Dr. Buck’s findings are some of the most thought provoking discoveries in the field of optometry as of late. I mean we’ve all had a black person walk in front of our car while we were late for an appointment at least once. For years this used to anger me but now when I see a black man slowly crossing the street bereft of a crosswalk threaten to smash my windshield with a bottle of malt liquor in a paper bag I only see the miracle that is the cornucopia of nature.”
The Reverend Al Sharpton was available for comment on the subject of the essay and had a very different perspective. “This is an utter atrocity. A confabulated hypocrisy. This college educated jive turkey seems to be forgetting one fantasmagoric fact. Black people got places to go.”
Dr. Buck could not be reached for further comment to respond to these allegations.
