Lazy, selfish, dishonest assholes get everything handed to them without any work or pain on their part while unassertive, unconfident, shy nice guys get shat on.

This is the wrong attitude to have.
It's clear why assertive, confident types get everything, its just evolutionary psychology. No one will ever like shy, unassertive, unconfident types; its just not in our nature. And ask yourself, are you really nice? Are you not just being nice to manipulate others into thinking well about you? Most people who complain about assholes getting everything are not nice people, they just try to make others think that they are.
Instead, try being more assertive and confident. The most cliched advice rings the most true, be 'yourself' and have confidence in your abilities.
