Scientific alternatives to the Big bang

Name: Nanami 2008-05-21 13:25

I find the Big Bang rather illogical, it goes against everything I know.
Is there any alternative, scientific theory explaining our Universe without reasoning that a single event that created everything?

The Big Shrink:  Space has not been expanding; rather, the meta-spacial material within it has been contracting.  Think about it:  if the universe is defined as everthing everywhere that can't expand into something else because there is nothing else, then how can we say that the universe is taking up more space?  Becoming bigger compared to what?  There is nothing else available to compare its bigness to.

That's balderdash, of course.  The observations of our universe show that the fabric of the universe is definitely expanding.  If this is expanding into something else -- call it the negaverse -- then it's still true that WE are expanding.  If the negaverse is undergoing a Big Shrink, then that has no direct correlation on our Big Expansion.

Ah, but we are told that is most definitely is not expanding into something else.  For if there was a something else, that would be part of the universe too.  Therefore it makes no sense to say that the whole of the universe is gettting bigger, when there is no frame of reference outside of the universe with which to make the comparison.

It's invalid to consider that something the universe is expanding into, as being part of the universe.  FAIL.

Exactly, which is why the universe can't be expanding into anything.
