Since divorce was still a taboo topic in general when the Brady Bunch came out, the only rational explanation was spousal death.  That meant that the Brady combined family was always overshadowed by a fundamental tragedy that indelibly marked the parents and can only have influenced the children.

Watch a few episodes and you'll see this background of deep sadness that marks a lot of the actions of the father and mother.  Is any surprise then that emo culture arose in the Post-Brady Era?
