Embarrasing MSN "feature"?

Does anyone know if others can see when you swap between avatars/display pictures in Windows Live Messenger/MSN Messenger BEFORE you press "accept" or "OK"? It seems like that since when I have a chat window open with people, sometimes their display picture/avatar changes rapidly, as if they are selecting them for consideration locally. Very strange if this is the case, and a huge privacy issue.

I once switched to a picture of a my penis without pressing "OK"/"apply" while my cousin was on-line. Maybe he saw it...
