Cutting one's own hair

I like to keep my hair short in the back, because once it starts to grow out it does this annoying curl thing that I hate.  However, it grows fast enough that I don't consider it worth it to get a haircut every other week just to keep that trimmed.  So any tips for cutting your own hair and making it look good?
