Why is the letter "i" in the word "Bible" long? If I remember my english correctly a vowel can only be long if another vowel comes immediately after it or is atleast one consonant over. Now the closest vowel to "i" is "e" and it's two consonants over so there for the word "Bible" should have a short "i" sound and be pronounced Bib-le instead of Buy-ble, right?

Well, it came from "biblio", which was, indeed, a short vowel. No idea why they changed it.
