Anyone heard of the "Butter up a old/dying relative so you'll get some inheritance" Trick?

Okay, sit-rep.
1. the upper level of my family (aunts uncles mom dad) used to have 6 people in it. Aside from my mom and dad, I had 3 aunts and 1 uncle, all from my mom's side as dad's brothers all died before I was born.
2. Mom, dad, Uncle R, and Aunt J1 lived in the midwest like the rest of us, my aunt's Ruth and J2 lived way the hell out in California.
3. My only living Grandparent, Mom's mom, lived by Uncle R in Northern Illinois.
4. In '02, Uncle R was being stalked/harassed/threatened by a local wanna-be meth dealer. When Ron lost it and went to settle the score with the guy, the dealer murdered my uncle with a baseball bat and skated by claiming it was 'self-defense'
5. Grandma moves to upper-west Wisconsin to live with Aunt J1, who unfortunately was an alchy, and died last year when her liver gave up.
Before this point, I had no IDEA that I had family, aunts, uncles, cousins and what have you, out in California, because in all my years, they had Never contacted any member of the family in the Mid-west, including my Grandma.
6. After J1 died, Ruth starts trying to convince Grandma to come out to California, "To be with family who'll take care of her" My mom and sister fight it, and end up losing as Grandma goes with the age old "I'll decide with whoever has the last say" idea. And as a bonus, Ruth also convinces Grandma to give Ruth "Power of Attorney"
7. Grandma goes out to California, and those who care in the mid-west consistently get the "Aunt Ruth Voice-mail" saying that grandma can't talk right now. Grand total, we manage to speak with grandma about 7 times over the course of 10 months.
Brace yourself, here's where the fuck-up comes in.
8. 2 weeks ago, we get word that Grandma's having heart problems, my sister and her fiancee rush out to Cali. (I couldn't. Finals and Term papers) When they come back, they elaborate to me that
----A. after a bit of snooping, Ruth was planning on sticking Grandma in a nursing home. (whether this plan was after the heart problems, or in the works before then is anyones guess.)
----B. Money was an issue, because Grandma wanted something to leave behind for her kids/grandkids, and she chose living with Ruth (or my mom) because she had tried the nursing home thing and it was sucking her money dry. Ruth claims that because of her business, she'd have no problems taking care of Grandma. Sis finds out in Cali that Ruth had close her business because she was going bankrupt.
----C. Money again. At one point, Grandma got so bad that the doctors said “She could go any minute”. The same day they said that, Ruth came running into the hospital with a statement for one of Grandma’s $9000 CD’s along with a Notary and a Social Worker to witness and verify that Gran was coherent. (Which is double bitch because the DAY BEFORE, Ruth had said Grandma is incoherent/incompetent and can’t make decisions for herself…but she can still sign a contract to give Ruth cash?)
----D. The last issue, again a money issue. Ruth has Power of Attorney, which means she’ll be the one to decide who gets what from Grandma’s inheritance. (Grandma does have a will but Ruth is pulling some kind of a power-play and not letting anyone else in the family see it)
Okay, y'all can see where this has been going.
Tuesday morning, Grandma passed away. She has a reserved spot next to Grandpa in Illinois. Despite this, Ruth started fighting tooth and nail to keep the "Costs down", saying things like it'll be too expensive to ship her back, that kind of bollocks. When she lost that argument, she started her focus on the service itself "We should have the viewing and Funeral be on the Same day! Grandma doesn't need Flowers at her funeral, that's too expensive!"
The stuff I heard second-hand from how Grandma was being treated when she was alive was making me mad enough, (which included a lot of stuff too personal to write here) Despite this….creature being my aunt, She deserves to get dragged naked across a desert of broken glass.
