WHY try to achieve, grow, improve, etc?

Name: Anonymous 2007-04-24 11:29 ID:McHEvS2p

For almost all of my life I've been the kind of person who, when I've wanted something but it involved what I considered to be a lot of effort, I always said "nevermind, I'll do without". Which is why I'm almost 34 never had a gf and am a virgin. It's also the reason why I have a huge gut, have a job that pays $11/hour because it doesn't require much effort on my part, and spend any time that I'm not working at home playing PS2 or on the internet so I don't have any friends. Even when I did have friends (both of whom were AFC losers just like me) it would annoy them that I would p!ss and moan about not feeling like hanging out and doing anything, preferring to stay at home by myself and you guessed it, play PS2 or go on the internet.
Okay, here's my question in a nutshell: for a person like me who for almost all of his life has been very passive and lazy by nature, and only makes a commitment to something (like a job) when it's literally a matter of survival, WHY set goals and try to achieve them, why try to grow as a person, why try to "do something with your life"? Why NOT just avoid life as much as possible, clinging to the dull old and safe because at least it's familiar, rather than trying to accomplish something that may or may not work out, and definitely will require effort, sacrifice, inconvenience and discomfort? Is there some reason why it's NECESSARY to try to grow, learn, achieve? What's my motivation NOT to just waste my life away?
For some it may be natural as can be: "I do it because that's just who I am, I love challenges" or "I do it just because it feels good to accomplish something". But this is just the way I'm wired, at the present anyway, that avoiding unpleasant circumstances motivates me a lot more than seeking pleasant ones. Call me a loser, call me a pussy, etc. I already think that of myself so that's not going to motivate me either.

You only live once. We’re all put on this world for whatever reason but I don’t believe we have any obligation to it. We could as easily choose to do the same things over and not bother to develop ourselves in anyway, and that is not wrong. But essentially, we all live for ourselves, so we each have to choose our values, desires, and goals individually. If you’re fine with what you have and you don’t want anymore, then who can complain?

One word of advice though. I hope you’re not overlooking any life potentials. Take the analogy of the fish who lives its entire life in water. Would that fish even understand the concept of water and wetness if it’s constantly surrounded by it? Basically, it is easy to be content with the status quo, such as playing games all day and living a life in solitude, out of the assumption that nothing else is worth it. But how can you really know what’s out there if you haven’t at least given it a shot? You could live a solitude life, but ask yourself, there’s a whole world out there, wouldn’t it not hurt to go give a few things a try? I mean I think you know where your current life will lead you anyways, so why not try something different. Wouldn’t hurt. Again, you’re given this whole world to explore and you only live once.

But an advantage I think you have, assuming you’ve had this attitude for sometime, is that you probably aren’t filled with societal preconditioning like most other people. Stuff like how most people are conditioned to enjoy certain mainstream things, or think a certain socially acceptable way, or express nationalism and the like. These people are generally acting out their biases, so although they may be more outgoing in life than you, they can be thought as merely executing a preconditioned mentality. You, on the other hand, have avoiding a lot of these things and I believe you’ll benefit the most if you should engage the world. You’ll see the world without bias and you’ll be more a critical thinking. And thus, I think you may actually get more out of the world objectively. The downside is, you’ll probably get fed up with how society works and how ignorant some people are. But, after realizing this, what you do from here is anyone’s guess and I’ll leave that to you to decide.

That was an awesome reply. I totally agree. And while I'm in the same boat as >>1, I play games and leave it at that most of the time, I do still know there are better things out there. I lack motivation, but I figure with enough time, little by little I'll get closer to having what I want/better things if I at least put in *some* effort. So I just do a little here and there to improve my surroundings and myself. Eventually I'll get there.

To the OP, I think that could work for you too, go at things slowly. I believe it's the one thing that works for us lazy bastards.

Perhaps set a very general goal and work at it little by little, checking in every few weeks. You'll probably feel good to notice whatever progress you have made.
Specific goals tend to suck and are too stressful to ever work out. And they always lead to disappointment.

I agree, there is no point to trying to achieve, grow, or improve in life. My only purpose in life is to get all the cause as much trouble as I can. I'm trying to see how much one person can fuck up.

Here's a legitamate way to change your life AND have fun!!!

You play MMORPGs right?  Well... go outside and pretend your in one.  I've done this.  See that old lady?  She has tons of experience points cuz she's been playing this game a long time and TONS OF LOOT! Go get it!!!  See those little black kids hanging out in front of 7/11?  They're PKers and are probably going to cap your ass for your loot.

Go outside and build your RUN skill.  You'll get faster.  There are high-quality garments with high defense and appeal at Old Navy go shopping.

Carry a dagger and pretend your a thief.  Then rob someone.

People go to work during the day and leave their abodes unattended this is the prime time to enter and take their loot.

Make it your goal in life to collect as much loot as possible by any means possible and at anyone elses expense.  This is fun and great profit.  Plus it gets you wymens and there is nothing better to wrap around your cock than hot snatch.

Go.

Take a jump.

As long as you are OK with yourself you should be fine, if you are not and as I can see most of you aren't - you should change your life.

If playing games all day makes you happy then fine, if not - CHANGE MOTHER FUCKER !

We live only twice.

how about this... next time you think about going somewhere, go there.  even if it's idaho, take a road trip to fucking idaho.  if something catches your eye, have a look at it.  you won't find accomplishment, or much pleasure, or anything else that way but who cares.  Fact is, you're bored as hell with everything. Even something shitty is something different.  have a sense of humor and stop worrying so much about what happens to you.  You need not live for any better reason than to entertain yourself.  Within reasonable ethical boundaries, mind you :p

Don't change these.
