it's frustrating being an academic and knowing what art really is and not being able to explain it to fucktards who think that anime either is or isn't art.

Well, it's a form of art, just animation. If somebody made some fanart of something anime-related then it would be anime art, or at least anime-themed art.
I mean, tattoos are a form of art, hell so are piercings and even self mutilation in some cultures and ways of life.
