In the Japanese form of the game there's a quest to bring her back to life. 1 time shot or you fail. In US it's only a glitch that allows her to be there, but the game really doesn't recognize her being there.

Something about taking out the disc, putting in some game like SaGa Frontier 2 and loading it, and playing the game as normal and the scene where Aeris dies still goes on but Aeris is still in your party and doesn't talk. Then putting back in the other disc and saving.

There's another way. In the English version, from the beginning of the game, you have to be completely horrible to Tifa and wonderful to Aeris. Avoid every opportunity to be nice to Tifa. If given the choice, always leave Tifa behind and take Aeris with you. If you can be nice to Aeris, by all means, do it. Even if it means making the game more difficult to play, do it. If you do this right, when Sephiroth comes down to stab Aeris, Tifa will push her out of the way and Tifa will die instead of Aeris.
