Do modern houses still have sliding doors? How prominent are "Western" hinged doors? How prominent are forks and knives compared to chopsticks? How prominent are chairs in places such as the dinner table, etc, or is it more common to sit on the floor? If so, do they use some kind of cushioning? How many houses utilize push-to-talk intercoms when entering? Call me a weeaboo faggot or whatever, but are rooms generally as clean as they are in the animes, or is that a utopian scenario? It's just that I've noticed a severe difference in those rooms compared to, like, MY room.
Anyone have any input?

Also! I'll be the first to admit that I don't know all that much about the Japanese language, but how do word processors work? How about Japanese keyboards? Do Japanese programmers use QWERTY keyboards and program in the Latin alphabet?
Eh, shit. I bet I sound stupid. I am asking various questions about modern-day Japan. I've just been accumulating various off-topic questions, and now I hope they get answered!
ok i am in japan right now so I will tell you what i see.
Sliding doors only exist in japanese traditional style resteraunts, bars, and houses. Sometimes there are automatic sliding doors. Japanese style buildings have sliding doors, while western has the hinged doors, Sometimes a combination of the two. Outside though I see more western hinged doors than japanese sliding doors.
Chopsticks are used with anything that are suitable for chopsticks, for example Japanese food, Chinese food, etc. Forks and knives are used most or at all times when eating western dishes. Same with the chairs, Common sense..
All major stores and supermarkets are always far cleaner than they are in the west.
But inside japanese houses especially older lower class buildings are crappier than places i've lived in the west. In the ghetto suburbs houses are made out of wood, living conditions I heard were crap.
Only the higher class , new buildings are clean (Tokyo), but it all really depends on the person living in the house.
anyways if you ever decide to come to japan make sure to bring lots and lots of money so you can avoid the lower class dark side of Japan. Living-wise it is almost like a utopia...with almost everything you need right next door, convinient transportation, products, electronics ANIMU, loli etc. Anything you think of that you need you will always find it.
But you can only have access to these things
if you have millions and millions of dollars to spend. If you don't have much money Japan becomes a boring, dull place to live.

I like the way employees in Japan give a shit about their job and actually SERVE you in the shops instead of giving you additude and that "dunno I just work here" bullshit.
It's the whole "honor and respect" thing. You work in a place of service, it's in your job description to actually offer service. It's not like the fucking kids working at Blockbuster here in the states.

I see you got an answer from some one in the Tokyo area, so let me give you an answer from the Kagoshima area of southern Japan.

Most houses had western style front doors, and sliding interior doors. For example in my girlfriend's parents house only the front door and the door to the toilet were Western style doors.

Depends on what and where you are eating. At home most food was eaten with chopsticks.

Lots of people had a dinning room table and chairs, so I'd figure it is pretty common. Outside of the dining room, chairs were pretty rare. When there weren't any chairs there were cushions/pillows.
