Is reacting instantly and with extreme violence to insults, real or perceived, the right thing to do?

So would a good approximation to the level of violence I should use is not to draw blood or cause visible bruising? That would make me feel like a wife beater, I want what I do to be visible. So I should do this in public, if someone insults me privately, I take them into a public place and start slapping thme around or something.
