Needing help with Mac

I have an eMac and I've tried to download things like Civilization III which I've seen at the apple store and wanted to try a demo for it. The file never works though. I downloaded it from 3 different people then I actually downloaded the game overnight and it still didn't work. Then Video in Avi format doesn't work either. I've searched for hours and picked up a stuffit expander from the info I saw but at the same time I've gone no where with it. Is there any easy way to run this stuff or are all the Mac commercials really bullshit?
