Are they really necessary? No :/ not with today's technology and medical health care.
They usually look so gross. A very small percentage of them actually look good, and when I say small I mean loli. But it's so much bullshit and they don't look "better" they just appeal to a different type of guy. Guys with mommy issues, I imagine.
