You see, the problem is that the furries who dress up in animal costumes are literally insane, leading to such furry quotes as "I'm MORE than human! I emrace my animal spirit!" They have lost track of who they are.
The rest of the fetishes like tentacles and dickgirls have much less to do with knowing who you are, and much more to do with being attracted to something perverted.
