How to avoid the real world?

Name: OP 2006-05-07 12:01

So. I graduate from college in a few days. But. I don't want to get a real job yet. I'm about halfway done writing an MMORPG (yes, laugh if you like) so I'd like to avoid the real world until I finish writing that and can start marketing it. So. What can I do to stay away from the real world for another year or so? I'm not going for my Masters, so forget more school. I already got turned down for JET too, so that's a no-go. I could just go back to shitty McD job for the summer, but would rather not. Ideas?

I'm in the same boat.  I have no way to get funding unless I beg investors, which I'm not good at.   Let me know if your MMORPG is close enough to mine.  The MMORPG design boards at vnboards.ign.com have some good ideas.  PM "Ilpallazo" in the "I need money" thread.

Bah, I'm not worried about money. I've found ways around that (secret). Even if I didn't have this game tho, I'd still wanna fuck around another year or so before getting a long term job. I wanna at least get turned down from JET a second time before considering entering the real world. I don't care about making money in this year, I just want to not live in my parent's basement and not spend a lot of money. Here's an idea to get you started: Peace Corps.

why don't you want to be in the "real world"?  It's better than fucking college and all the fucking dependency on parents and shit, and debt and no life other than absolutely USELESS assignments.  What the fuck are you thinking going to jet?  Going to Japan to teach English is far worse than any "real world job" you will get here.  It's shit!!  It's a job with long hours, little respect, little pay.  If you're willing to put yourself through the torture of one of the shittiest jobs in the world, teaching english in a foreign country, then why the fuck are you afraid of the "real world"?

Just work in construction or warehouse for a year.  Mindless work with good pay.

Hmm... here in my country warehouse workers don't get a good pay.

Afraid from the real life? Well, I'm 23 and I'm just in the middle of it. I've been working for a small company as a programmer for almost 3 years now. Yes, sometimes I'm totally fed up with it and I never have enough free time but at least I don't depend on my parents anymore. Thanks to my job, I have my own car and I never need to borrow from my family - they borrow from me. :P
The bad thing is that I only earn the equivalent of $2 per hour. :( - but that's only because I don't have a diploma yet...

So don't be afraid, it's easy to get used to a job.

Also, making lots of money off your own games is possible too.

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-08 18:57

Yes it's possible, but you have to be at the right place and have to know the right people in order to succeed.

Do you mean $20 per hour?  I hope so.
And you're right, a person can "get used" to a job very easily.  When you're a student, it might seem like the working world sucks, but you get used to it, and soon it's really not so bad.  In fact, I find it much less stressful, and much better than college.  In fact again, I now think of college as a completely useless waste of time and money, and to hell with dependency on parents.

in my country, getting 2$ a hour is considered quite rich.

I have been avoiding the real world quite successfully. First I got a CS degree. Didn't look for a job though. Didn't do anything really for about six months. Went back to college. About done with another degree (not a masters)... don't know what I'll do next. Never had a job. Depending on parents. 23. Pretty pathetic, but you can get used to any thing.

I wish I would. But I live in a small, pathetic country called Hungary. Even dough it's now part of the European Union, the pay isn't European. :(
It's pretty hard to fing a job with good pay here. I want to start my own business, but first I need some cash.

This isn't all about just staying out of the working world, it's also about stalling for time while I finish writing this game.

This is what I want to hear. I shall keep my head up for these jobs.

1000 subscribers @ 10$ a month * 12mo/yr = 120,000$/yr :D
(minus server and bandwith costs, anyone have pricing on these?)

Server and bandwidth cost? Hell, that's gotta be a few thousand per server and several hundred to several thousand per month for bandwidth. Anyone wanna confirm this? That's what I hear for some of the medium sized sites but I'm not sure.
