When you can go to the Smithsonian and look at pictures that consists of 2 or 3 colored squares with black outlines that are valued in the millions, this isn't pathetic at all.
I'm not saying it's not pathetic, I'm just saying that I'd probably be willing to pay 2 or 3 bucks for the MT stuff, but you'd have to pay me to hang up any of that shitty symbolic abstract crap which is supposedly much more valuable.

Most of the "artwork" that fits that stereotype are actually color studies or studies in form/shape, they were meant to either find the "perfect" balance of either colors or shapes in relation to the canvas/each other/etc. They weren't meant to look good, they were products of much thought and a process of trial and error that now act as guidelines for graphic designers/artists/etc., in regards to composition. It's kind of like saying "E=mc^2" is just a simple equation without considering the proof behind it.
