No single person or race has anything to do with California's economy, either propping it up, or bringing it down.  Most of California's primary exports come from the entertainment industry (Hollywood), the tech industry (Silicon Valley/Burbank) or agriculture (Central Valley), not to mention a whole bunch of other things, like an aerospace industry (that is unfortunately, much smaller than it once was), and the some of the busiest ports on the West coast.

And Bill Gates/Microsoft is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia.
