Why do french count in such a complex way?

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-28 16:46

Hi there. I am a Chinesefag college student ( do I need to add a "fag" given that this is 4chan?). Last semester in the calculus class, our lecturer said that France produced so many great mathematicians is because they have a complicated numerical system  which gets their math brain trained on a daily basis since they are little. Then he showed us how french count, I was like WTF?
Serious, why do you frenchfags have such a complex counting system, isn't that troublesome?

You really don't have to add a "fag", it's quite stupid.

I suppose you're referring to how we have "soixante-dix" (sixty-ten, 70) "quatre-vingts" (four-twenty, 80) and "quatre-vingt-dix" (four-twenty-ten, 90).
It comes from the Celts who had a vigesimal (base 20) numeral system. In english it also survived in the name of digits up to twenty.

I don't think it's the reason why we had great mathematicians, your lecturer just told you some nice story.

I find that "soixante-dix, quatre-vingt, quatre-vingt-dix" thing to be quite horrendous and too complicated.

Swiss have it right:
70: septante
80: octante/huitante
90: nonante

It's so simple.

Belgians use "septante" and "nonant"e but not "octante/huitante". That's dumb. They're halfway.

Don't change these.
