Japanese Mystery Kanji / Radical

I'm trying to improve my reading and grammar skills by playing the JP version of Animal Crossing: Wild World, and I've come across a kanji I can't find anywhere. I've tried using the IME pad and the kanji by radicals search on Jisho.org, but neither turns up anything that looks like it. The closest I can find is 戸, but it should have a vertical line going through the top horizontal line and down to the bottom horizontal line of the square. Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Annd, another myster kanji in the text... looks like 貝, but with only one stroke inside the square, and a 冖 on top. Why am I coming across so many unknown characters? Could it be because the font is so small?

声? It would help if you had a picture of any sort, or the rest of the sentence the character appears in.

A lot of fonts assume you know the characters. It's nearly impossible on many older games for example to distinguish the characters in isolation.

That must be it. I guess the size of the font made the bottom line of 士 blend into the top line of the 尸. Any idea on the other one?

冥 ?

No, it almost looked like 日 with 冖 sitting on top and 八 on the bottom. It's pretty much identical to 貝 when I see it on the DS, but the top square is indented a bit, hence the 冖, rather than just 目.

Also, the two middle squares that look like 日 are pretty wide.

Describing it in this manner is unlikely to get you anywhere, as it could be any number of things that are either being missed or are not in the character as it is displayed.

Did you write down or can you replicate the sentence that it came in? In 9/10 cases, the appropriate character can be guessed using nothing but context.

Here, I drew it in paint. Best I can do.

Like I said, that's what it LOOKS like, considering how small the font is.

Maybe a really, really squished 員. But as >>8 said, I think we would figure it out in a snap if you provided the line it appeared in.

Probably that one, because I was talking to たぬきち (Tom Nook) when that showed up. He must have mentioned something about becoming a member? I can't get a screenshot now, because I already got past that point in the game.

Like This? 負?

Low-resolution Japanese fonts tend to squish elements together, making some kanji difficult to identify if you don't already know the proper version. If you run into 鬱 anywhere in that game I bet it will be illegible.

You can always zoom in on the page.

He's talking about a video game, not a web page. Did you even read the earlier posts?

Or hell, even the post you quoted:
>anywhere in that game

Don't change these.
