Learning a language?

Name: Anonymous 2011-12-26 15:45

OK, what is the best method for learning a language? The precise language is French, but a more general method would be great as I will be living in Belgium and need Dutch and German in the next few years.

I have the basics down, am enrolled in a local language course (quite basic, but hey), and have a grammar book. Any more tips?

Learn the grammar then learn vocabulary through spaced repetition.

As I said, I will be living in Belgium, so French and Dutch (Flemish) would be rather useful!

well if you know English  it's easier for French because almost half of English vocabulary is taken from French
And English is also related to German in vocabulary as far as i know     .... if it helps you with anything

I hear Dutch is the easiest language to learn for English speakers? Is this true?

I'd say no. Since Dutch is an icelandic language while it has relations to germanic languages, it's too far removed to comprehend effectively on sight. I have an easier time taking a guess at German (duh), or French since English already has so many words taken from French, and visa-versa.

What's an Icelandic language? Dutch is a Germanic language (as is English), and whilst they deny it, it is like an anglicised German. I found it really easy to learn, far more so than German. It is rater by most rankings as the easiest to learn for English speakers, but of course it depends what languages you currently speak, and your exposure as well (French resources are a lot more common than Dutch!)

Norwegian is probably easier than Dutch for native English speakers.
