Linguistic newb

So far I've only studied specific languages, but now I'd like to start reading more about languages in general... How does a newb enter into the field of linguistics? Is either Chomsky or Pinker a good place to start?

Wrong board? Never mind. I'm starting with Pinker's "The Language Instinct" and Lomb's "Polyglot".
