Why don't you just learn how to pronounce English? It's very similar to French.

I bet it would sound very interesting if you tried to read aloud or speak English.

In fact, I'd like to request that you make a recording of yourself reading some English text, perhaps from a news site or this thread or wherever. I'm really interested in hearing how you sound.

Name: Anonymous 2011-06-24 15:19

We should all focus on mastering all the sounds of the IPA. Then languages will come more easily to us.

Name: Anonymous 2011-06-25 20:34

i know english and low-level spanish (which i hate). my high school only offered spanish, so i took it to fulfill the university i will be attending's language requirement.

i am studying french on my own, at the moment. i've studied japanese in the past, so i understand basic principles of the language, which i'll be continuing through an intensive program this fall.

i wish to be fluent in french, russian, and german. there are a few others, such as middle eastern/central asian languages, classical greek, etc. which i find daunting and slightly less useful, so they're lower on my list.

right now, i'm trying to figure out how i'll go about this, as 18 to 20 credits per semester will be pushing my limits, and my japanese course alone is 10. i also know that i'll need to cram in other classes for whatever major i eventually settle on. i'm thinking a mix of autodidactic study, basic classes or peer instruction, and straight up travel will be best.

Partial thread hijack.  How hard/self-defeating is it to learn several languages at the same time?  I'm a native English speaker and I know a fair amount of spanish, but I'm moving to Japan in a few months and want to know how bad I'll fuck myself up if I try to learn Spanish and Japanese at the same time.

Name: Anonymous 2011-07-02 2:01

Native: Portuguese.

Not at all, especially when it comes to completely different languages like Japanese and Spanish. In fact I am studying those two right now without trouble.
You might run into issues with similar languages like French and Spanish, but it is plain impossible to mix up Spanish and Japanese.

Name: Anonymous 2011-07-12 0:41

I was raised with both Greek and English and can speak fluently in both, but am currently pursuing Japanese.

Name: Anonymous 2011-07-15 15:16

Native: English
Can get around in Spanish, but I don't care that much about it.

Learning Arabic at the moment via college. I just finished my first final (I got a 100%) and my professor has said that he's never seen someone pick Arabic up so quickly before. I'm just four weeks in and I can have five minute long conversations.

I'm going to take 4 years of Arabic at college, so far I just finished the first semester of the first year (I'm in a special summer language program).

I'm going to be taking Pashto and Kurdish (Kurmanji) in the fall.

Name: Anonymous 2011-07-16 16:09

I can read Dutch, English, German and French (French just barely though)

I'm learning Japanese

I'm planning to learn Mandarin (already started, I now know the basics), Spanish and Icelandic.

Why would anyone want to learn russian?
Film making is long dead.
Video game industry hasn't been even born.
Modern literature is dead. Sure, you could read classic, but does it really worth it?
Maybe you've got a russian friend, but unless he's a complete idiot, he speaks english anyway. So why bother?
