English in musical lyrics - why?

I hope this is the right board for this.

I have been asked in the past why so many German metal bands have English lyrics. Even when I thought about it for some time, I could not give a good answer other than "they were probably influenced by an American or English band" or "it seems to sound cooler or more powerful" back then, which are pretty lame answers, I have to admit. Thinking about it some more, I realized that not only metal bands but music of almost any genre in Germany has English lyrics. This is probably true for many other countries, isn't it?

Why do you think so much music has English lyrics, instead of the native language? Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with that. I just keep wondering why that is.

For the vast majority, every popular style of music that is thought of as "global" (the originals of pop, house, rock and roll, rap, etc.) started in, was popularized by, and disseminated from America or American minds. Bands and producers aren't directly "influenced" by English anymore than the Chinese are constantly "influenced" by western building standards and irrigation systems. It's simply ingrained in their musical culture. Japan is a prime example, as most pop songs have at least 1 English word thrown in to keep things moving. Granted that the Japanese study English as a compulsory subject early in their education (and I assume the majority of Germans have a strong command in it as well), words are often inserted for their "feeling" or "impact" more than their precise meaning or appropriateness. More than that, its known that pop music in its entirety derives from the west, and is a western concept when lined up against traditional "Japaneseness", so it's not that far of a leap to make in the mind of the Japanese writer even though it can be quite strange and even jarring to western ears. If you reverse the factors, you'll prove the equation: How many English rap songs have you heard with Japanese lyrics? Rock with Cantonese? etc.
