ok im slightly confused as to which of these to use when describing something.
the examples i have seen show
aka-i (red)
kirei-na (pretty)
taka-i yama (a high mountain)
kirei-na hana (a pretty flower)
Im confised as to which i use at which situations.
please someone explain this to me.

I think the "na" ending is more formal than just "i", but I'm not too sure, nihongo nuubu desu.

Uh.. there's two different types of adjectives. I and NA adjectives.. an adjective can only be one type. So when you look up an adjective in a dictionary it will tell you which one it is, and when you use that adjective before a noun like in your examples, you put the i or na after the adjective.
