Ancient Greek => Modern Greek

If I know Ancient (Hellenistic) Greek how difficult would it be to make the jump to modern Greek?
I know that the phonology is vastly different, but what about the grammar and vocabulary? Is it like the difference between Latin and modern Romance languages, or more like the difference between old and modern English?

More like Latin > Romance languages.
Learning one should help you to learn another, but they aren't mutually comprehensible, different phono, grammar and lots of vocabulary.

Indeed, Latin helps immensely with French and more erudite English words.
So it's quite a big jump and there's probably no point in trying to learn Modern Greek?

If you want to learn it then there is a point in trying to learn it

Hey, >>5 is right.
Do you like it? Want to learn? Want to live in Greece?
If "yes" to one of them, there IS a point ;)

But if you want to learn Attic Greek, do it directly, not by Modern Greek. Just treat both as related languages and forget a bit one comes from another.

Don't change these.
