How do I shorten them? How do I strip them down to their most necessary components?
Take Abu Al-Hasan Ali ibn Othman for example. He was a fellow from the Marinid Dynasty back in the day.
What's the shortest part of his name that's still recognizable and won't be confused with someone else?

In his case it's usually shortened to Abu al-Hasan, but I can't think of any steadfast rules to do it (the Persian scholar Abul Hassan Ali Ibn Usman al-Jullabi al-Hajvery al-Ghaznawi's name is shortened to Ali Hujwiri, for example, but why was al-Hajvery chosen?). When writing about Abu al-Hasan, I think it would be best to use his full name for the first time and then his short name unless there's possibility of confusion.

It's really simple, take a bomb, strap it around an arab's waste, detonate it. Now it's shortened.
