Knowing a foreign language too well?

Do you sometimes feel like you know another language better than your mother tongue?

For years it has been happening to me that sometimes during a conversation, an English word comes to my mind that I'd like to use but I can't think of a good equivalent in my mother tongue. So if the person I'm speaking to is adept of the English language, I'll just use the word. Otherwise I stagger, trying to think of a translation or how to paraphrase what I want to say. It's really awkward, people sometimes think I'm mocking them or that I'm a retard.

What's your native language?
I only know English to any degree of fluency, so to answer your question not yet.

As a matter of fact I do know what you mean. Using the internet, and other forms of English language media, I pick up words and phrases that I then put to regular use, without ever really bothering to find a translation for them. This often puts me in that same, embarrassing situation, where my brain will tell me to communicate an idea, without bothering to mention that I haven't the tools to do so.

Then, of course, there's the twats who just translate whatever English phrase literally and act as what they just said actually meant something. Fuck you and your "pitkässä juoksussa".
