Help Frenchanons!

Dear French Anons,

I need to decide where in France to go for my year abroad and I could use some help please.

My first choice university is Paris- Sorbonne IV, but I don't know which university to choose as my second choice. This is important as it is very likely that everyone and their mother will be applying to the Sorbonne so I want to have a decent back up.

It's between:

Provence (Aix Marseille I) - seems to be a good university, Marseille is supposed to be nice, near the beach would be nice in the summer

Lumiere (Lyon II) - not so sure about the university, it doesn't seem to be ranked highly, but I'm an avid snowboarder and Lyon is near enough to the mountains to possibly warrant a season pass or quite a few visits at least. I hear Lyon is quite nice.

Paul Valery (Montpellier III) - seems to be an okay uni, Montpellier supposed to be nice coastal city.

Perpignan- don't know much about the town if university

Frenchanon here. I agree with what my fellows said up to me : Marseille is not a good city (it's dirty, not beautiful, full of immigrants (which is not supposed to be a problem, but most of them believe that Marseille is maghreb, and they're not wrong, trust me)).

Lyon has a good university and it's a pretty and big city (the 2nd biggest in france). A lively town, where I'm sure you'll enjoy your study-time. The university has a good reputation.

Montpellier is an awesome city for students, very active, and beautiful (it's like a medieval city, with small streets and various shops everywhere, from japanese import to role playing game.), and  the university is well ranked as well.

Sorbonne in Paris has the best reputation. Well, Paris is like... 1/5 of whole France, with 10 millions inhabitants, you'll find all that you seek, and enjoy the legendary bad humor of parisians. But it's a guaranty of good studies.

Finally, DON'T go to Marseille !
And I'll advise you Lyon, the best choice where you'll either know the townspeople or country people. For me, it's the most balanced.
