2 languages at the same time?

Name: Anonymous 2010-04-25 10:18

What does /lang/ think of this? I've seen various views, some say that as long as you don't study them back to back, but rather spaced apart by a few hours, it's fine. Others say they tend to get confused and jumbled, and it slows down learning of both tongues.

What does everyone here think? Has anyone tried learning two or more languages at the same time? How much time did you put in to do it, and what were the results?

If the two langs are not related, or only loosely, it's OK. Like, learn Russian and Japanese, or French and isiZulu at the same time.

Trouble arises when you try to study languages related enough to you mix them in your mind, like Russian and Ukranian or Portuguese and French. You'll try to compensate vocabularuy and grammar that you don't know in one in the other one.

If they're related wait until you get intermediate level in one before starting the other, if they aren't you can start at the same time but I'd still wait until I was intermediate in one.

Because the language or not. I do not understand how people think and vice versa.

I intend to start learning German and Irish simultaneously.
But I think they're more than different enough to avoid confusion, and I have a very basic level of Irish already, enough that I know for certain I won't try and compensate for one with the other.

I imagine learning two similar languages, like French/Spanish/Italian could cause problems though
