How to concentrate on one language?

Name: 三日坊主 2010-04-02 15:20

I'm having a bit of a crisis here. I have a history of learning a lot of different languages, and so far Japanese has been the one language I've managed to study the most consistently and devotedly. But my affair with Japanese has been interrupted many times by a desire to study various other languages - Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Latin, Russian, Danish, Norwegian, Farsi, Spanish, French, German - I've studied all of those languages within the last three years.

On the one hand I love languages and want to study and get acquainted with a lot of them but on the other hand I'd also like to master a foreign language before I turn 30, which I feel I'll never be able to accomplish if I keep constantly oscillating like this.

Currently I have the strongest feelings for Japanese, Arabic, Hindi and Russian, but choosing between them and sticking to a single one is so incredibly hard.

This thing is ruining my life. It's stressing me to no end and I feel that one of these days I'm going to get a nervous breakdown.

I just don't know anymore.

Just pick one. It doesn't really matter which TBH, because as your expertise grows, you will find any of them extremely rewarding. Do Japanese because you've studied it the most so far.

Choose which one you think would be most useful. My suggestion? Japanese. They're becoming the England of the 21st century.
... Or maybe the France...

Stick with three of them if you think it's hard just to stick at one... just make sure they're from different families - or else you'll start to mix them.

From your list: Japanese, Arabic and (Russian OR Hindi) together is OK. I would advice to not learn Russian until learn WELL Hindi or vice-versa: both are Satem languages and YES, you can mix them.

Don't change these.
