am I looney or just lazy?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 6:36

I was in my live in process of learning many languages, and to some extent I learned English, German and Russian. I learned most from reading books, watching TV and listening to audiobooks, but I always had some start in classes and courses. I recently tried to learn Italian and Japanese, but I hate practicing and learning vocabulary. So I decided I would stop learning and just listen and read, because I can watch TV or read books like whole day and half the night. I see already that I can make it with Italian but Japanese is a different story. It is too different to european languages and I can't read because of kanji.
Do you thing it is possible that I will actually learn at least spoken Japanese if I listen to it for 2 years?
And am I crazy or just lazy. I though I may be crazy because most if not all people are, but as I am Polish I may be also extremely lazy?
What is your opinion? Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very, very lazy, OP.
However, it does pay to learn the hiragana and katakana.  You will be able to read and consequently pick up the language eventually if you study those two character charts.  Be prepared to spend a long time on it though, as you mentioned you've had no experience outside of European languages.

If you want to achieve anything in Japanese, you should at least start with the hiragana and katakana.

You can hardly pick up anything that's written if you only know the kana. Unless you read something that's meant for children, that is, but that might become annoying at some point.

Also, seconding >>2; you are very, very lazy, OP.

Thanks. So I know now that I am lazy, although I learned actually hiragana. But is it looney to expect to learn language just by listening to it without learning?

As I am Polish so Russian was in school curriculum, but I learned better after college. I have no problem watching tv news and dramas, but reading is harder, as sentences are much more complicated and vocabulary more sophisticated. But I never tried speaking nor writing except in school.

Yes, this does not work.

If you put a newborn infant in front of a TV everyday for many hours, they will not learn the language spoken. Participation is essential to learning a language.

Don't change these.
