What is the Japanese equivalent of 'Jane Doe'? I have found some data on the most popular first names in the last decade in Japan, but reports on surnames are mixed as to what is the most common. I have been using basic search engines to conduct this research. Does anyone have recommendations as to how this might be better carried out, or would they simply know?
On this note, are there traditions by which Japanese names are selected, or are they arbitrarily assigned in the same manner as Western names?
