Why does the American accent sound so stupid?

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-23 6:04

Serious question.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-23 9:55

16th century English pronunciation + various European and African accents = American accent

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-23 14:04

Same reason listening to a British accent is like pushing your head through mush.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-29 19:47

Retarded fucking question. There's no such thing as an "american accent" too many accents here that are too different.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-29 23:17

It's not like some American accants sound close to British or Aussie ones, they all sound 100% American. And they all sound stupid.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-30 7:03

American accent sounds good, i know that coz i'm french and i heard lots of language so stupid. :okay:

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-30 21:37

>>5

So they don't sound like shit? that doesn't make them stupid

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-06 5:45

I never had that much trouble with American accents, but for god's sake I just heard Americans pronounce Betelgeuse as Beetlejuice.

FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-06 8:34

whenever I hear some american "scientist" say "aluminum", I turn the tv off

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-07 2:48

Hear, hear!
How fucking hard can it be to get it right?

Name: !MILKRIBS4k 2009-09-07 12:34

HOWDY PARTNER, I AM AN AMERICAN! wwwwwwwwww

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-07 14:30

I really don't like the American rhotic sound. And the overcharged intonation. Most video tutorials narrated by Americans (e.g. www.lynda.com) make me tired.

>>6
I'm French too, and i prefer British and Australian accents to American by far. I also hate the French English accent (I've been correcting mine by studying & practising the Estuary accent so hard). And "coz" used by a non-native like you just looks lame to me, sorry.

>>9
I get the same feeling. But i force myself to watch it in their original accents (especially on YouTube) because the content (science) interests me a lot. I feel relieved when i chance on one of those made by BBC.

I know I don't speak english as well as the american people, but I'm only 14, and I think I speak well for a french14 years old boy.

>And "coz" used by a non-native like you just looks lame to me, sorry.

why? when we learn language we pick such slang as well, i don't see anything bad with it

When British singers sing, why does their accent become American?

America > Britain

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-10 2:48

It's easier to sing the vowels if you flatten them. Their accent doesn't become American, it just becomes flat - and that's not even all the time. I think you ought to listen to more British singers.

If there is any advantage to the American accent, it would be that it acts as the "text to speech" or "robot" of the English language: It pronounces every syllable cleanly, by the text-book rules, and omitting un-needed vowels from the written language. It's clean English, but with absolutely no character (well, then there are regional accents like in the South... that has character...). The Canadian Accent is also quite close to English, with a few notable differences.

My order of accent preference I would put
- British
- Scottish & Welsh
- Irish
- American/Canadian
- Australian (sorry :[ )

Many British singers are distinguishable from American singers by just listening to them. Even though i'm not a native English speaker, i can tell the difference.

>>17

Mine would be
- British
- Welsh
- Scottish
- Irish
- Canadian
- American

I'm not sure about Australian and New Zealand. Some of them are very close to British, others to American. The Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns speaks and sings like a British, but his wife Natalie Imbruglia speaks and sings like an American, when they are both Australian. I like the accents of Australian YouTubers like AngryAussie (http://www.youtube.com/user/AngryAussie) and 1GOD1JESUS (http://www.youtube.com/user/1god1jesus). There are some American accents i seem to like, again from YouTubers like Crosisborg (http://www.youtube.com/user/crosisborg), but he is of Irish descent, maybe that's why.

No character.
Yeah, right.

Welsh and Scottish accents are British you morans.

I think you mean the English accent.

Name: DD 2009-12-07 12:25

Its because they mispronounce the correct spelling of a word. But I'm not so keen on English accents either. They sound gay.

pronounce ... spelling
Wut.

You will find different accents across the UK, same as you wild the US. The modern British accent sounds horrible. fink abaot it fow a momint.
Scottish people dont sound like that.

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-08 0:12

Britfag here. There is no "British" accent, retard. Britain is an island, within which are England, Wales and Scotland.

I'm a canadian and I can honestly say our accent is not very english at all, I lived abroad and got used to hearing english and american accents and I can honestly say now that I can hear the difference I'd put canadian close to last. I cringe when I hear people raise their dipthongs...

I'd say

-English (RP)
-General American
-New Zealand
-Australian
-Scottish
-Canadian
-Southern American English
-Various chavy english accents

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-08 2:25

in my opinion, southern accents only sound 'stupid' because people with this accent speak too fast. the accent is very capable of sounding nice as fuck if people were to take time and speak slowly, to take the time to make love with my ears and the insides of them.

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-10 14:30

Never heard southern accent sound fine. In fact there is some show on TV I haven't looked at only because it contains a character with an annoying southern accent.

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-13 1:19

Why do British men all sound like homosexuals?

Srs question.

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-15 20:25

British can't fucking pronounce the final r in words, instead they just say "ah" like a fag opening up his mouth just before being fed a cock. They also can't fucking tell that 'tube' is spelt with a 't' and not 'ch'.

You fuckers probably never read a book in your lives, so what else can we Americans expect of people who never see words written properly? Thank god your worthless country lost its empire and now has no influence over the direction of modern English internationally.

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-16 3:27

this thread brings to mind a wonderful exchange of words from the simpsons.

oh yeah? bart come 'ere a minute!

no you come 'ere a minute!

oh yeah?

Troll louder, I don't think they can hear you in back.

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-19 14:16

Are you serious? have you not ever though that americans pronouncing the T is wrong? I am sure that you do not say thawguhut when trying to say thought? And worthless Empire? If the Empire did not exist then many things that we have today would not exist, think next time before you post, and have a nice day.

At least we don't say it 'toob'. What the fuck is up with that?

What do you say? Chyube?

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-24 11:14

At least General American is not nearly as retarded as Estuary English (or "Heschry" if you want the authentic feel) or whatever you call the accent that kids speak these days in the Yew-Käy.

>>11
Yeah, "howdy partneRRRRRRR" to you too, Britfag.
Here's a speaker who's spoken English way longer than you, in a way more authentic way, in a way more English part of the country, and in times before mass surveillance and Muslims: http://www.bl.uk/learning/langlit/sounds/text-only/england/portesham/

Name: Anonymous 2010-03-24 22:49

OP, that's because United-Statian ARE stupid. So their accent sounds stupid too.
