Who has experience with it? What are your thoughts?

michael thomas is much better. pimsleur is basically just a phrase book that moves more slowly.

It isn't a replacement for a proper language textbook, but another tool to use I suppose.

This.

OP, start with Michel Thomas, it will really kick start your language learning (or solidify your foundations). I was amazed how much I learned with his 8-hour beginner German course. I'm about to go on to the advanced one now.

Pimsleur is also useful, but not as intense or fast-paced. It uses native speakers and will really drive things home through the constant repitition. It can be hard not to fall asleep though because the tapes really are boring.

The boringness is the main problem. But I guarantee you'll remember 90% of whatever you learn through it, unlike many other courses.

It progresses really slow, if you're not easily bored you'll learn a decent amount of everyday phrases. If you good at noticing patterns, you may also pick up some grammar.  One thing I don't like about Pimsleur is that it's geared towards (American) tourists.

For me Michel Thomas was far more effective to start my language learning.

Don't change these.
