Another verify

Name: Tim 2009-08-02 12:30

I've translated the interface to a free paste bin application I'm writing. Below is what I've pieced together for a Japanese translation using online translators and some creative searching/cut and paste. I've already done the work... but I need someone to verify my work.

I asked for help on another site but they were lame. The post sat there with no replies for over a week. I figured since /lang/ was gracious enough to help me last time, this was the place to turn! どうもありがとう

-Tim

Hi Tom,

I'm not good at English but hope you find it informative. First of all, am I get it right?

paste bin: software/service for sharing programming source code or some text
paste: a code fragment to be shared

フラグメント and 断片 have been used for "paste" in your translations. If you want to standardize the term, see below.

ペースト : "paste" in Japanese Katakana (phonetic notation commonly used for foreign word)
貼り付け : "paste" in Japanese, generally seen in application's edit menu as in "copy and paste"
フラグメント : "fragment" in Katakana
断片 : "fragment" in Japanese

About --> このソフトウェアについて (about this software) or <app name> について (about <app name>)
Users would think isolated について a bit clumsy. Untranslated "About" or isolated アバウト ("about" in Katakana) are occasionally seen though.

Feedback --> フィードバック ("feedback" in Katakana, generally seen on applications)
ご意見 is not mistake, but rarely seen on app's menu possibly because it looks like you have to go somewhere else to report a bug.

Pasted: <date> --> 掲示日: <date> (bulleted date: <date>) or 投稿日: <date> (submitted/posted date: <date>)

Expires: <date> --> 保存期限: <date>

"Never" --> (see below)
If "Never" means there's no timespan limitation to show pastes, 指定なし (none specified) or すべて表示 (show all) would fit.

Sorry, that paste does not exist. --> そのフラグメントは存在しません。
I just omitted the "Sorry" (すみません) part. By the way, みません have a completely different meaning, "(I) won't see/watch/look at (it)" :)

The page you requested does not exist on our server. --> サーバーに指定されたページがありません。

All pastes are the property of their respective owners. --> すべてのフラグメントは、それぞれの所有者に帰属します。

We are not responsible for the content of this website. --> 本ウェブサイト上のコンテンツについて<company name>は責任を負いません。
I used <company name> instead of pronoun 我々 ("we"). Japanese language have a tendency to avoid pronouns compared with English, and the repeatition of the company's name won't look strange in Japanese.
I suppose 負いかねます would be too modest to be in no-resposibility/no-warranty notations. It's good as a sugercoating in spoken language though.

Site designed by <company name> --> このサイトは<company name>によって設計されています。

All rights reserved. --> (see below)
something like "Copyright (C) <year> <copyright holder>, All rights reserved."  are generally noted in original English on translated document, even appears on Japanese domestic books/documents/webpages, and most of Japanese people get it. I'm not sure but I thought it's a notation involved with the U.S. copyright law of pre-DMCA era and some international copyright issues.

Target --> 対象
比較先 ("target for comparison") is generally used for it.

Paste #1, line #2 --> フラグメント #1, #2行

Thanks for the help, ah-uh! I didn't want to pester /lang/ but I didn't know where else to go. You're a life saver!

I'll standardize on フラグメント as you suggested with your corrections.

So, what's the correct way of expressing my gratitude in /lang/?  I can't flash my privates or something if this were /b/. lol

I'm glad I could help. Sorry but there're some things I missed/forgot.

1 month --> 1ヶ月 (not 1か月)
2 months --> 2ヶ月
6 months --> 6ヶ月
This is a conventional notation. I guess I should post this on the "Why your language sucks" thread. :)
how to pronunce: いっかげつ (ikkagetsu, "1 month")
how to write: 1ヶ月/1箇月, small Katakana ヶ (ke) used for simplification of Kanji 箇 (ka) instead of か (ka).

I think フラグメント is a good choice. Loan words are often used for new concepts or key features for the purpose of distinction, and Japanese users have been used to that.
